White Zombie Zoanthid (Zoanthus sp.)

The White Zombie Zoanthid is a highly recognizable zoanthid morph prized for its dramatic contrast and intricate facial pattern. Its polyps typically feature a pale white-to-silver center surrounded by darker red, burgundy, or purple coloration, creating the striking high-contrast appearance associated with the White Zombie name. A contrasting skirt frames each polyp and gives established colonies additional texture when fully extended.

Under blue-spectrum reef lighting, the brighter portions of the polyp can become especially prominent while the deeper reds and darker tones provide strong definition. Like other Zoanthus varieties, White Zombies grow by producing new polyps from an encrusting mat, gradually developing from a small frag into a larger colony under stable conditions.

Placement & Flow

Place White Zombie Zoanthids on lower-to-middle rockwork where they receive consistent, indirect water movement. Moderate flow helps prevent detritus and algae from accumulating around the polyps while encouraging healthy extension.

Avoid positioning the frag directly in front of a strong powerhead. The polyps should remain comfortably open rather than being continuously folded or forced closed by the current.

As the colony becomes established, new polyps can spread onto surrounding rockwork. Provide enough room for growth and avoid direct contact with aggressive neighboring corals.

Lighting

White Zombie Zoanthids generally perform well under approximately 75–150 PAR. Moderate lighting can provide a good balance between healthy growth and maintaining the contrasting coloration that makes this morph desirable.

Gradual acclimation is recommended when introducing the frag to substantially stronger lighting. Under blue-spectrum illumination, the pale center and fluorescent accents can become especially pronounced, while a balanced reef spectrum provides a more natural representation of the complete coloration.

Feeding

White Zombie Zoanthids are primarily photosynthetic, receiving much of their energy through symbiotic dinoflagellates within their tissues. Regular target feeding is not necessary when they are maintained under appropriate lighting and stable reef conditions.

They can also capture very small suspended particles. Occasional additions of fine particulate coral foods or appropriately sized zooplankton-based foods can provide supplemental nutrition, although heavy feeding is unnecessary.

As with all zoanthids, use appropriate care when handling or fragging. Zoanthids may contain palytoxin or related compounds, so gloves and eye protection are recommended, and they should never be boiled, exposed to hot water, or handled around open cuts.

With its unmistakable pale center, deep contrasting coloration, and detailed polyp pattern, the White Zombie Zoanthid is an excellent choice for adding high-impact contrast to a zoanthid garden or mixed reef. As additional polyps develop, this distinctive morph can grow into an increasingly impressive display while requiring relatively little space.
