Why a Diverse Cleanup Crew Matters

Different invertebrates naturally target different areas and food sources within the aquarium. The Fighting Conch concentrates on the sand bed, while Turbo Snails specialize in grazing hard surfaces. Blue Leg Hermits actively pick through rockwork and substrate, and the Peppermint Shrimp provides additional scavenging activity.

This variety helps distribute the cleanup effort throughout the aquarium rather than relying on a single type of animal to handle every area.

Feeding & Maintenance

A mature aquarium with naturally occurring algae and organic material can provide much of the pack's food. However, avoid assuming that a cleanup crew should be left entirely to "clean up" the aquarium. If algae becomes scarce or natural food sources decline, supplement with nori, algae wafers, sinking foods, or appropriately sized frozen marine foods.

Provide empty shells in various sizes for the Blue Leg Hermits as they grow. Secure rockwork is also recommended because larger Turbo Snails and Fighting Conchs can occasionally move small or unsecured objects while foraging.

Reef Compatibility

All four animals are commonly kept in marine and reef aquariums. As with any cleanup crew, individual behavior can vary, and adequate food availability is important. Peppermint Shrimp may or may not actively consume Aiptasia, while hermits are opportunistic scavengers and should be provided with adequate food and spare shells.
