Placement & Flow

Place the Red Interstellar Mushroom on stable rockwork or a dedicated mushroom island with sufficient room for the disc to expand. A specimen that looks relatively small when contracted can become substantially larger once fully inflated.

Gentle, indirect flow is preferred. The mushroom should be able to inflate fully and move naturally with the current without being continuously pushed against surrounding rockwork. Avoid strong, concentrated flow, which can cause prolonged contraction or potentially dislodge the mushroom.

Rhodactis can reproduce and spread under favorable conditions. If you want to maintain control over its growth, an isolated rock or dedicated mushroom area is recommended. Allow reasonable spacing from neighboring corals, as a fully expanded mushroom can shade or irritate corals growing nearby.

Lighting

Red Interstellar Mushrooms generally perform well under 30–100 PAR. They do not require intense lighting and can be successfully maintained in lower-light areas of a reef aquarium.

When introducing a new specimen, begin toward the lower end of the recommended range if its previous lighting is unknown and acclimate gradually to stronger illumination. Sudden increases in intensity can cause contraction, stress, or changes in coloration.

Blue-heavy reef lighting can enhance fluorescent pigments and bring additional depth to the red coloration, while a balanced reef spectrum provides a more natural representation of the mushroom's appearance.

Feeding

Rhodactis is primarily photosynthetic, receiving much of its energy from its symbiotic algae, but it can also capture small food particles from the water column.

Supplemental feeding is optional but beneficial. When fully expanded, occasional offerings of fine powdered coral foods, phytoplankton, or small zooplankton-based foods can provide additional nutrition and support growth. Feed appropriately sized portions and avoid placing large pieces of food directly on the mushroom.
