Lava Lamp Discosoma Mushroom
Lava Lamp Discosoma Mushroom (Discosoma sp.)
The Lava Lamp Discosoma Mushroom is a colorful soft coral prized for its fleshy disc, fluid movement, and contrasting coloration. This type of Discosoma can develop a rich base color accented by brighter spots, streaks, or fluorescent areas that create a flowing, lava-lamp-like appearance across the disc. Under blue-heavy reef lighting, its fluorescent pigments can become especially noticeable, adding depth and contrast as the mushroom expands.
Discosoma mushrooms are generally hardy and adaptable corals that can thrive under relatively modest lighting and flow. As the mushroom matures, it can expand substantially and reproduce by splitting, eventually forming a cluster of individual mushrooms. Its combination of vibrant coloration, fleshy texture, and relaxed growth habit makes it an excellent option for adding color to lower-light areas of a reef aquarium.
Recommended Care
- Scientific Name: Discosoma sp.
- Common Name: Lava Lamp Discosoma Mushroom
- Care Level: Easy
- Lighting: Low to Moderate, approximately 30–100 PAR
- Water Flow: Low to Moderate — gentle, indirect flow that allows the mushroom to inflate naturally
- Placement: Lower to Middle aquarium
- Temperament: Semi-Aggressive
- Growth Form: Solitary mushroom; can reproduce by splitting
- Feeding: Primarily photosynthetic; supplemental feeding is beneficial
Placement & Flow
Place the Lava Lamp Discosoma on stable rockwork or a dedicated mushroom island where it has room to expand. Discosoma can become considerably larger when fully inflated, so provide adequate space around the specimen.
Gentle, indirect water movement is preferred. The mushroom should be able to inflate fully and move naturally with the current without being constantly pushed against surrounding rockwork. Avoid strong, concentrated flow, which can cause the mushroom to remain contracted or potentially detach.
As Discosoma reproduces, new mushrooms may develop and spread across nearby surfaces. If you want to keep the colony contained, an isolated rock or dedicated mushroom area is recommended. Maintain reasonable spacing from neighboring corals, as larger mushrooms can shade or irritate nearby corals.
Lighting
Lava Lamp Discosoma generally performs well under 30–100 PAR. These mushrooms do not require high-intensity SPS lighting and can be an excellent choice for lower-light areas of the aquarium.
When introducing a new specimen, start toward the lower end of the recommended range if its previous lighting is unknown and acclimate gradually to stronger illumination. Sudden increases in light intensity can cause contraction, stress, or changes in coloration.
Blue-heavy reef lighting can enhance the fluorescent pigments within the disc and emphasize the contrasting pattern, while a balanced spectrum provides a more natural representation of the coral's coloration.
Feeding
Discosoma is primarily photosynthetic, obtaining much of its energy from its symbiotic algae. It can also capture small food particles from the water column.
Supplemental feeding is optional but can support growth and overall condition. When fully expanded, occasional offerings of fine powdered coral foods, phytoplankton, or very small zooplankton-based foods can provide additional nutrition. Feed lightly and avoid placing large pieces of food directly on the mushroom.
Lava Lamp Discosoma is an excellent choice for reef keepers looking for an easy-care soft coral with distinctive coloration, fleshy texture, and natural movement. Its modest lighting requirements and ability to develop into a larger mushroom cluster make it a versatile way to add vibrant color and visual interest to a mixed reef or dedicated mushroom collection.
