Galaxea Coral (Galaxea fascicularis)

The Galaxea Coral is a striking LPS coral known for its bright fluorescent polyps, textured appearance, and incredible coloration under reef lighting. Each individual corallite develops delicate tentacles that give an established colony a dense, almost star-like appearance—earning Galaxea its common nickname, the Galaxy Coral.

Galaxea can be an excellent choice for reef keepers looking for a hardy, fast-growing LPS with plenty of visual impact. However, this coral is also known for its very long sweeper tentacles, so proper placement and plenty of surrounding space are especially important.

Placement & Flow

Provide moderate, indirect water flow that keeps the polyps gently moving and prevents debris from accumulating between the corallites.

Galaxea should be given significantly more space than most LPS corals. Its sweeper tentacles can extend several inches beyond the colony—particularly at night—and are capable of damaging nearby corals. Avoid placing sensitive corals directly downstream or within its reach.

Lighting

Galaxea generally performs well under moderate reef lighting. Gradual light acclimation is recommended when introducing the coral to a new aquarium, especially when moving it into higher PAR.

Feeding

Galaxea receives much of its nutritional needs through photosynthesis but can also capture food from the water column. Occasional feedings of small LPS pellets, mysis, or finely chopped meaty foods can help support healthy growth.

With its fluorescent star-like polyps, unique texture, and impressive growth potential, Galaxea is a beautiful and hardy LPS coral—just make sure to give this aggressive beauty plenty of room to call its own.
