Placement & Flow

Place the Charmander Rhodactis on stable rockwork or a dedicated mushroom island where it has plenty of room to expand. Rhodactis can become substantially larger when fully inflated, so account for its eventual size rather than judging spacing by its contracted appearance.

Gentle, indirect flow is ideal. The mushroom should be able to inflate fully and move naturally with the current without being continuously pushed against surrounding rockwork. Avoid strong, concentrated flow, which can cause the mushroom to remain contracted or potentially detach.

Rhodactis can reproduce relatively readily under favorable conditions. If you want to contain its spread, an isolated rock or dedicated mushroom area is recommended. Maintain reasonable separation from neighboring corals, as a large, fully expanded Rhodactis can shade or irritate nearby corals.

Lighting

Charmander Rhodactis generally performs well under 30–100 PAR. Lower to moderate lighting is usually sufficient, making this coral well suited to areas of the reef that are unsuitable for high-light SPS.

When introducing a new specimen, start toward the lower end of the recommended range if its previous lighting is unknown and acclimate gradually to stronger illumination. Sudden increases in intensity can cause contraction, stress, or changes in coloration.

Blue-heavy reef lighting can enhance fluorescent orange, red, yellow, and green tones, while a balanced spectrum provides a more natural representation of the mushroom's overall coloration and texture.

Feeding

Rhodactis is primarily photosynthetic, receiving much of its energy from symbiotic algae, but it can also capture and consume small food particles.

Supplemental feeding is beneficial but not required. When fully expanded, occasional offerings of fine coral foods, powdered reef foods, phytoplankton, or small zooplankton-based foods can provide additional nutrition and support growth. Feed appropriately sized portions and avoid placing large pieces of food directly on the mushroom.
