Bullseye Rhodactis Mushroom
Bullseye Rhodactis Mushroom (Rhodactis sp.)
The Bullseye Rhodactis Mushroom is a colorful and highly textured mushroom coral known for its fleshy disc and contrasting coloration. Its appearance can feature a pronounced central area surrounded by contrasting rings or color zones, creating the distinctive “bullseye” pattern that makes this morph especially appealing to mushroom collectors. Under blue-heavy reef lighting, fluorescent pigments can become more pronounced, bringing out additional contrast and depth across the disc.
Like other Rhodactis, this mushroom can develop a thick, fleshy appearance when fully expanded and gently moves with the surrounding water flow. It can grow by expanding its existing disc and reproducing through splitting or budding, eventually developing into a cluster. Its relatively forgiving care requirements and distinctive pattern make it a versatile choice for both newer reef keepers and experienced coral collectors.
Recommended Care
- Scientific Name: Rhodactis sp.
- Common Name: Bullseye Rhodactis Mushroom
- Care Level: Easy
- Lighting: Low to Moderate, approximately 30–100 PAR
- Water Flow: Low to Moderate — gentle, indirect flow that allows natural expansion
- Placement: Lower to Middle aquarium
- Temperament: Semi-Aggressive
- Growth Form: Solitary mushroom; can reproduce by splitting or budding
- Feeding: Primarily photosynthetic; supplemental feeding is beneficial
Placement & Flow
Place the Bullseye Rhodactis on stable rockwork or a dedicated mushroom island with adequate room for the disc to expand. Rhodactis can become significantly larger when fully inflated, so provide spacing based on its potential mature size.
Gentle, indirect flow is ideal. The mushroom should be able to inflate fully and move naturally in the current without being continuously pushed against rockwork. Avoid strong, concentrated flow, which can cause the coral to remain contracted or potentially become detached.
Rhodactis can reproduce and spread under favorable conditions. If you prefer to keep its growth contained, placing it on an isolated rock or dedicated mushroom area is recommended. Maintain reasonable space from neighboring corals because a large mushroom can shade or irritate nearby corals.
Lighting
Bullseye Rhodactis generally performs well under 30–100 PAR. These mushrooms are well suited to lower-light areas and do not require intense SPS-level illumination.
When introducing a new specimen, begin toward the lower end of the recommended range if its previous lighting is unknown and acclimate gradually to stronger lighting. Sudden exposure to significantly higher PAR can result in stress, contraction, or changes in coloration.
Blue-heavy reef lighting can enhance the fluorescent pigments and emphasize the contrasting pattern, while a balanced spectrum provides a more natural representation of the mushroom's coloration.
Feeding
Rhodactis is primarily photosynthetic, but it can also capture small food particles from the water column. Supplemental feeding is beneficial but not essential.
When the mushroom is fully expanded, occasional offerings of fine powdered coral foods, phytoplankton, or small zooplankton-based foods can provide additional nutrition. Feed lightly and avoid placing large pieces of food directly on the mushroom.
Bullseye Rhodactis Mushroom is an excellent choice for reef keepers looking for a colorful, heavily textured soft coral with a distinctive pattern and easy-care nature. Its contrasting appearance, fleshy growth form, and fluorescent response under blue lighting make it a standout addition to a mushroom collection or established mixed reef.
