Brightwell Aquatics Reef Code B – 500 ml is the carbonate-bearing component of Brightwell’s two-part calcium and alkalinity system for marine and reef aquariums. Its multi-component buffering formula helps maintain alkalinity and pH stability while supplying carbonates required by calcifying reef organisms.

When used with Reef Code A, Reef Code B supplies calcium and carbonates in proportions based on natural seawater. Its formula also contains bicarbonate, sulfate, borate, minor minerals and trace minerals, with no phosphate, silicate or organic material.

Reef Code B can be dosed manually or through an automated dosing system. Because every aquarium has a different rate of alkalinity consumption, regular testing allows the dose to be tailored to the system.

ISLAND REEF PRODUCT GUIDE

Everything You Need to Know

Product Type / Use Liquid alkalinity and carbonate supplement for marine and reef aquariums; Part B of Brightwell Aquatics’ two-part Reef Code system.
Size / Volume 500 ml
Suitable For Marine fish and reef aquariums containing corals, clams, calcareous algae and other reef-building organisms. Suitable for aquarists maintaining alkalinity manually or with a dosing system.
Overview & Care

Brightwell Aquatics Reef Code B is the carbonate-bearing component of a two-part system for maintaining calcium and alkalinity in marine aquariums. Its multi-component buffering formula supplies carbonate and bicarbonate while also contributing sulfate, borate, minor minerals and trace minerals.

When used with Reef Code A, it supplies calcium and carbonate in proportions designed around those found in natural seawater. Test alkalinity regularly and adjust dosing to match the aquarium’s actual consumption.

For best results, Brightwell recommends maintaining magnesium between 1,290 and 1,320 ppm to help reduce unwanted precipitation between calcium and carbonate ions.

Key Benefits

• Supplies carbonates that contribute to alkalinity and pH stability
• Forms Part B of a balanced two-part calcium and alkalinity system
• Supports skeletal growth in corals, clams and other calcifying organisms
• Adds carbonate, bicarbonate, sulfate, borate, minor minerals and trace minerals
• Can be dosed independently according to measured alkalinity demand
• Contains no phosphate, silicate or organic material
• Suitable for manual or automated dosing

Directions & Usage

Shake well before every use.

Basic dosing:
Add 5 ml per 25 US gallons (94.6 L) of aquarium water every other day, or as required to maintain alkalinity between 7 and 12 dKH.

Correcting low alkalinity:
If alkalinity is below 7 dKH (2.5 meq/L), add no more than 5 ml per 10 US gallons (37.9 L) daily until the desired level is reached. Test regularly and then establish a maintenance dose.

Advanced dosing:
Each 1 ml raises the alkalinity of 1 US gallon (3.785 L) by approximately 2.22 dKH or 0.79 meq/L.

Daily maintenance dose:
1. Measure alkalinity at the same time each day to determine the daily decrease.
2. Divide the daily decrease by 2.22 when measuring in dKH, or by 0.79 when measuring in meq/L.
3. Multiply the result by the aquarium’s total water volume in US gallons.
4. The resulting figure is the approximate daily dose in millilitres.

Do not mix Reef Code A and Reef Code B together in the same container. Allow at least 60 seconds between dosing the two products.

Ingredients / Composition

Purified water; inorganic carbonate, bicarbonate, sulfate and borate salts; minor and trace minerals.

Guaranteed Analysis:

What's Included

1 × Brightwell Aquatics Reef Code B, 500 ml

Setup & Installation

No installation is required for manual dosing.

Before beginning:
1. Calculate the aquarium’s actual total water volume, including the sump and filtration system, while accounting for displaced water.
2. Test the aquarium’s alkalinity with an accurate test kit.
3. Confirm that magnesium is within the recommended 1,290–1,320 ppm range.
4. Shake the bottle well.
5. Dose according to measured alkalinity demand.

For automated dosing, place Reef Code B in its own clean dosing container and use a dedicated dosing line. Never combine it with Reef Code A in the same reservoir. Programme the pump according to measured daily alkalinity consumption and verify the result through regular testing.

Storage & Safety

Keep out of reach of children. Not for human consumption.

Contains carbonate and bicarbonate salts. Harmful if swallowed. If swallowed, give water and seek medical attention.

May irritate the eyes or skin. If the product enters the eyes, flush with water for 15 minutes and seek medical attention. If it contacts the skin, wash thoroughly with water.

Keep Reef Code A and Reef Code B in separate containers. Mixing the concentrates directly together will cause precipitation and make their active components ineffective.

Specific storage conditions are not stated by the manufacturer.

Common Problems & Troubleshooting

Alkalinity remains low:
Confirm the aquarium’s actual water volume and test alkalinity consistently. Determine the system’s daily consumption and adjust the dose gradually within the manufacturer’s maximum correction rate.

Alkalinity rises too high:
Pause or reduce dosing and continue testing until consumption brings the level back into the desired range. Recalculate the maintenance dose before restarting.

White deposits or precipitation appear:
Check magnesium and maintain it between 1,290 and 1,320 ppm. Never mix Reef Code A and Reef Code B directly, and leave at least 60 seconds between additions.

Calcium and alkalinity require different doses:
This can be normal. Reef aquariums may consume calcium and alkalinity at different rates, so Reef Code A and Reef Code B do not always need to be dosed equally. Adjust each product according to accurate test results.

Results vary after dosing:
Shake the bottle thoroughly before use, verify the test kit and measure alkalinity at the same time each day.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does Reef Code B do?
It supplies carbonate and bicarbonate that contribute to alkalinity and buffering capacity in marine and reef aquariums.

Does Reef Code B raise calcium?
No. Reef Code B is the carbonate-bearing alkalinity component. Reef Code A supplies calcium.

Must Reef Code A and B always be dosed equally?
Not necessarily. Equal quantities provide calcium and carbonates in a balanced ratio, but actual aquarium consumption may require different amounts of each product.

Can Reef Code B be used by itself?
Yes. It can be dosed according to measured alkalinity demand, even when the required amount differs from Reef Code A.

What alkalinity should be maintained?
The manufacturer recommends maintaining alkalinity between 7 and 12 dKH.

How concentrated is Reef Code B?
Each 1 ml raises the alkalinity of 1 US gallon by approximately 2.22 dKH or 0.79 meq/L.

Can Reef Code A and B share a dosing container?
No. Mixing the concentrates causes precipitation and makes the active components ineffective. Use separate reservoirs and dosing lines.

How long should I wait between Reef Code A and B?
Allow at least 60 seconds between dosing the two products.

Is it suitable for a dosing pump?
Yes. Use a dedicated reservoir and dosing line, then programme the dose according to measured daily alkalinity consumption.
