Assorted Zoanthids (Zoanthus spp.)

Assorted Zoanthids are an excellent way to bring a mix of color, pattern, and texture into virtually any reef aquarium. Depending on the individual morph, polyps can display combinations of green, orange, red, yellow, blue, purple, and contrasting fluorescent tones. Their rounded oral discs are surrounded by short skirts of tentacles, creating dense, colorful colonies as the polyps multiply and spread across the rockwork.

Under blue-heavy reef lighting, many Zoanthid varieties develop particularly strong fluorescence and contrast, making even smaller frags stand out. Once established, Zoanthids generally grow by producing new polyps around the base of the colony, gradually creating a larger mat. Their manageable care requirements and enormous variety of color morphs make them popular with both newer reef keepers and experienced collectors.

Placement & Flow

Place Zoanthids on stable rockwork or a dedicated zoa garden where they have room to spread. Low-to-moderate, indirect water movement is ideal. The polyps should move gently rather than being continuously pushed to one side by strong flow.

Zoanthids do not produce the long sweeper tentacles associated with many LPS corals, but their spreading growth should still be considered when choosing placement. Leaving some space between different corals helps prevent the colony from eventually growing into neighboring specimens.

Lighting

A PAR range of approximately 50–150 works well for most commonly kept Zoanthids, although individual morphs can vary in their preferences. Moderate blue-spectrum reef lighting typically provides excellent coloration and fluorescence without exposing the polyps to unnecessarily intense light.

When introducing new Zoanthids to a brighter aquarium, begin them in a lower-light location and gradually acclimate them to their final position. Sudden increases in light intensity can cause polyps to remain closed or become stressed.

Feeding

Zoanthids receive much of their energy from their symbiotic photosynthetic algae and generally do not require frequent direct feeding. However, occasional supplemental feeding can be beneficial, particularly for established colonies.

Fine particulate coral foods, powdered reef foods, phytoplankton-based blends, and very small meaty particles can be offered sparingly. Good water quality and stable reef parameters remain more important than heavy feeding.
