Rainbow Bubble Tip Anemone (Entacmaea quadricolor)

The Rainbow Bubble Tip Anemone is a highly sought-after anemone known for its colorful combination of contrasting body and tentacle tones. Depending on the individual specimen, coloration can include shades of green, yellow, orange, red, pink, and other fluorescent accents. Under blue-heavy reef lighting, these colors and fluorescent pigments can become especially pronounced, while the long, fleshy tentacles create constant movement throughout the aquarium.

Entacmaea quadricolor is capable of developing the characteristic rounded “bubble” tips for which the species is known, although the shape of the tentacles can vary considerably with lighting, flow, feeding, and the individual specimen. Established anemones can grow substantially and may reproduce by longitudinal fission, producing additional individuals within the aquarium. Their combination of color, movement, and potential to host clownfish makes them a standout addition to a mature reef system.

Placement & Flow

Provide the Rainbow Bubble Tip Anemone with stable rockwork and plenty of room to move and expand. Unlike most corals, anemones can relocate themselves if conditions are not suitable, so placement should be planned with their mobility in mind.

Moderate, indirect flow is ideal. The tentacles should gently sway in the current without being continuously blasted by a powerhead. Strongly concentrated flow can cause the anemone to remain contracted or encourage it to move.

Bubble Tip Anemones can travel throughout the aquarium and may come into contact with corals, pumps, or other sessile invertebrates. They can sting neighboring corals and should be given substantial clearance. Always protect powerheads and overflow intakes with appropriate guards to prevent the anemone from being drawn into equipment.

A mature, stable aquarium is strongly recommended. Anemones generally do best in systems with consistent temperature, salinity, lighting, and water chemistry rather than newly established aquariums.

Lighting

Rainbow Bubble Tip Anemones generally perform well under 150–250 PAR, although individual specimens can adapt to different intensities when properly acclimated.

When introducing a new specimen, acclimate gradually to your aquarium's lighting, particularly if the anemone has been kept under substantially different lighting previously. Avoid immediately placing it under very intense light.

Blue-heavy reef lighting can significantly enhance the fluorescent colors of a Rainbow BTA, while a balanced spectrum will provide a more natural representation of its overall coloration.

Feeding

Entacmaea quadricolor is primarily photosynthetic, obtaining much of its energy from its symbiotic algae. However, supplemental feeding is beneficial and can provide additional nutrition for growth and overall condition.

When the anemone is fully expanded, offer appropriately sized foods such as mysis shrimp, finely chopped marine seafood, krill, or other suitable meaty marine foods. Feeding approximately once or twice per week is generally sufficient, although feeding frequency can be adjusted based on the anemone's size and the aquarium's overall nutrient levels.

Avoid oversized meals and allow the anemone to fully secure and consume its food before exposing it to strong flow.
