A mature aquarium with established algae growth and natural food sources will provide much of the nutrition needed by this cleanup crew. However, supplemental feeding may be necessary as the aquarium becomes cleaner.

Placement & Cleanup Activity

The strength of the Large Invert Pack is its variety of feeding habits and preferred areas.

The Fighting Conch concentrates on the sand bed, while the Turbo Snails focus heavily on algae-covered hard surfaces. Blue Leg Hermits actively pick through rockwork and substrate, while the Pithos Crab and Emerald Crabs provide additional algae-grazing activity throughout the aquascape. The Peppermint Shrimp adds scavenging activity and may help with Aiptasia control.

Provide stable rockwork and plenty of hiding spaces throughout the aquarium. Because hermits and crabs are opportunistic scavengers, maintaining adequate food availability is important.

For the Blue Leg Hermits, we also recommend providing a selection of empty marine snail shells in different sizes. This gives growing hermits alternatives when they need to move into a larger shell.

Feeding

A healthy, established reef should provide plenty of natural grazing opportunities, but a cleanup crew this size should not be expected to survive solely on nuisance algae.

Supplement with foods such as:

• Nori and dried marine algae
• Algae wafers
• Sinking herbivore pellets
• Frozen marine foods
• Small amounts of meaty foods for omnivorous scavengers

Feed according to the aquarium's natural food availability. The goal is to maintain a healthy cleanup crew without creating unnecessary nutrient accumulation.

Important Note

Cleanup-crew animals are natural grazers and scavengers, not a replacement for proper aquarium maintenance. Good nutrient control, regular water changes, appropriate feeding, and adequate filtration remain important for long-term algae management.

Peppermint Shrimp can help with Aiptasia, but individual shrimp vary and not every specimen will actively consume Aiptasia. Likewise, Emerald Crabs and Pithos Crabs are opportunistic feeders, so adequate food and appropriate stocking are important.
