The Pokerstar Montipora is a colorful SPS coral valued for its contrasting coloration, fine skeletal texture, and encrusting growth habit. Established colonies can develop a rich base color with contrasting polyps that become increasingly noticeable as the coral settles into a mature reef environment. Under blue-heavy reef lighting, its fluorescent pigments can become more pronounced, bringing out additional color and contrast across the colony.

Like other Montipora, Pokerstar typically begins by encrusting onto available rockwork before developing its characteristic plating or spreading growth pattern as the colony matures. Placement & Flow

Place the Pokerstar Montipora on stable rockwork with adequate room for the colony to spread. A position with good water movement and access to consistent lighting will encourage healthy encrusting and subsequent colony development.

Moderate to high, turbulent flow is preferred. Rather than directing a powerhead directly at the coral, aim for variable circulation that moves water around the colony from multiple directions. Good flow helps deliver oxygen and nutrients while preventing detritus from settling on the growing surface.

Although Montipora is generally peaceful, leave enough space from neighboring corals to prevent physical contact as the colony expands.

Lighting

Pokerstar Montipora generally performs well under 150–250 PAR. Strong, consistent reef lighting is important for maintaining healthy growth and coloration, but the coral should not be placed immediately under intense lighting without acclimation.

When introducing a new specimen, acclimate gradually to higher PAR, particularly if it was previously maintained under lower-intensity lighting. A gradual increase in intensity helps minimize stress and allows the coral to adjust to the new environment.

Blue-heavy reef lighting can enhance the fluorescent pigments and bring out additional contrast, while a balanced spectrum provides a more natural representation of the coral's coloration.

Feeding

Montipora is primarily photosynthetic, relying heavily on its symbiotic algae for energy. However, SPS corals can also utilize nutrients and very small food particles from the water column.

Supplemental feeding is optional but can be beneficial in a well-established reef. Suitable options include fine zooplankton-based foods, phytoplankton, amino-acid supplements, and appropriately sized powdered coral foods. Feed conservatively and maintain strong nutrient export to prevent excess nutrients or food from accumulating in the aquarium.
